Artist Statement + BIO

"My artistic practice delves into the exploration of freedom and its innate duality within the human condition. By liberating textile fibers from the constraints of traditional looms, I seek to unravel the intrinsic tensions that exist between structure and spontaneity, control and release. The woven forms manifest as tangible metaphors, echoing the yin and yang of our existence – the constant interplay between opposing forces that ultimately shape our experiences and identities. Through this tactile investigation, I invite viewers to contemplate the nuances of autonomy and the inherent complexities that define our journey as human beings.” —Cheryl R. Janis

Cheryl Ruth Fiber Art Studio is Cheryl Ruth Janis; a one-woman Modern Textile Artist in Missoula, Montana. Cheryl hand-weaves, hand-felts, and hand-dyes soft, feathery organic wool and peace silk wall hangings in an organic, modern style. Through her art, Cheryl explores the themes of esotericism—that which is light and effervescent, with the more dense concepts of living on earth. She explores questions like, “How can these seemingly opposing forces live in harmony within each of us personally, and without, in our communities around us?”

With a background in interior design and Feng Shui, Cheryl began her fiber art journey with weaving on a loom. This eventually felt too restrictive for her, and she began to search for ways to express a greater freedom and flow within her art. She discovered wet felting and dry needle sculpting to fill her desire to express more freedom within the fibers, and her work. Last year, Cheryl began weaving off-loom which offers a less restrictive container with soft feathery wool and silk fibers loosely woven in.

Cheryl earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in World Studies from The University of California at San Diego and spent many years as a Feng Shui Interior Designer with a focus on wellness; using color, shape, form and energy to create nourishing spaces for others to experience care and love.

She is also the host of The Healthcare Interior Design 2.0 podcast, where she interviews the world’s top wellness leaders and healthcare design professionals. Cheryl’s guests are those deeply compassionate folks who are planning, designing and creating our hospitals and healthcare facilities of today, with the intention of helping patients, families, caretakers and staff feel more nourished and cared for in these spaces.

Aside from creating textile art and running The Healthcare Interior Design 2.0 podcast, you can find Cheryl immersed in Montana’s forests, connecting to the earth, hugging trees, practicing Somatic Experiencing, and walking barefoot in the grass. Cheryl lives with her husband, Philip and their adorable Ragdoll cat, Yuki.
